If you’re like most business owners, you already understand the importance of having a website. You know that it’s required, and you’ve decided to move forward with getting one built. That’s great. But have you considered the implications of the “new web”? In the last 3-5 years, there have been some fundamental changes to the web thanks to smartphones and the rise of social media. What are these changes, and how do they affect your website needs and strategy?
The Web is Now Mobile & Social
At nine10, we recognize this change and have an internal mantra that guides us in all things web. Websites should be ‘Mobile-First’ & ‘Social by Design.’ In this article we’ll start with exploring what ‘Mobile-First’ means.
No matter where you look, the writing is on the wall. Experts predict that by 2014, the majority of traffic on the web will be from mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Currently, most websites experience close to 40% of web traffic from mobile devices.
Why is This Important?
Most websites are not designed to display well on the smaller screen of mobile devices or, in some cases, at all when the website uses Flash technology. When a website is not mobile optimized, it can be frustrating for users to navigate and read the site. The end result is they leave, limiting your chance to make a connection.
Additionally, when people visit a website on a mobile device, their behavior is different. They tend to go into what’s called ‘action-oriented mode’ where they are looking to complete a specific task. They may need a phone number, your address/location, a quick list of products/services, or a way to request more information from you. In cases where they want to perform deeper research, they‘ll likely visit the website from their desktop.
What This Means for You
When you’re getting a website developed, it’s beneficial to treat mobile not as an afterthought, but as a key component. nine10 develops mobile optimized websites in a style called ‘responsive design’. This means that your website is ‘fluid’ and adjusts its layout based on the size of the users screen. Websites display optimally, regardless if the user is on a desktop, netbook, tablet or smartphone device.
